Ground beef and pepperoni calzones

Ground beef and pepperoni calzones

Switch up the ingredients in the filling to suit your taste!

Ingredients:
Pizza dough, homemade or purchased
(See the recipe I use below)
1 lb lean ground beef, cooked until no longer pink
1/4 cup onion, cooked
1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped
2 pepperoni sticks, sliced
1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup pizza sauce
Italian seasoning, salt and pepper, to taste

Preheat oven to 450F

Make dough and divide into 6-8 portions (depending if you want bigger or smaller calzones). Stretch the dough into circles about 1/4" thick. Divide filling ingredients between calzones or let everyone choose their own ingredients! Sprinkle with herbs or seasoning if desired.

Fold in half over the filling and pinch or crimp the edges to seal in filling. Brush with oil and bake on a baking sheet for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Other filling suggestions: ricotta cheese, mushrooms, spinach, or any of your favourite pizza toppings.

Pizza dough recipe:

1 1/2 T active dried yeast

1 cup lukewarm water

pinch of sugar or honey

1t salt

3 - 3 1/2 cups flour of your choice

Put yeast in warm mixing bowl. Pour on water and stir in sugar or honey. Let stand 5-10 minutes or until it foams. With a wooden spoon, mix in salt and 1/3 of the flour. Mix in 1/3 more. Sprinkle some flour on counter and place dough on top and continue to knead in flour until it is smooth and elastic (you may not need all of it).

Form a ball, oil a bowl and put the dough in then cover with a damp towel and let rise 40-50 minutes or until doubled, then use in desired recipe.
