Quarter, Half and Whole Beef: Saskatchewan Freezer Beef Options

We get frequent calls from people looking to buy a half, whole or quarter cow. Beef prices (like all groceries) are higher than ever, and we know that you want to get the most for your money, while also buying a product that you feel good about. While buying in bulk is a smart strategy, a whole or half beef is not right for everyone. (We sell quarters only as a pre-made mixed box but you are welcome to split a half with someone - we can even have it boxed up into quarters if you let us know in advance!). We’ve made a checklist to help you decide if a buying a half or whole beef is the right decision:

1.       You choose beef as a meal quite often and use lots of beef

2.       You like to use all the cuts of beef including ground beef, roasts, steaks and more

3.        You will use the braising cuts like shanks, stewing beef and short ribs

4.       You are experienced with cooking these different cuts or are motivated to learn how to cook them all and willing to try them

5.       You might not need a half beef or whole beef but have friends or family that checked the boxes above too, and you could share a half or whole

There are many ways you can buy beef directly from a rancher in Saskatchewan. While buying halves and wholes is the preferred way for many farmers to sell, buying individual cuts of bulk boxes of the cuts you prefer can be a better decision for some.

Example; if you find it convenient to cook with ground beef and like the occasional steak, your best bet would be to buy 50 ground beef, to get our lowest ground beef price, and then buy a few of your favourite steaks. This is another great way to stock up your freezer beef without ending up with cuts you don’t enjoy left in the bottom of your freezer!

The price you pay for a custom half or whole beef is usually based on the hanging weight, which may seem like a much lower price, but is only the best price if you use all the cuts. If you haven’t purchased beef this way before, make sure to read this post about buying a half or whole to be sure you understand how it works.

We love to sell halves and wholes but more than anything we want you to be happy with the beef you buy from us! If you checked the boxes on the list and are still interested, our halves and wholes are ready to go in late summer and early fall. Email us at boxhfarm@gmail.com to get your name on our mailing list for halves and wholes – we’ll email you in the late spring/early summer with pricing and availability for the current year.
